The La Porte Independent School District celebrated the 25th anniversary of the class of 1987 5a state championship basketball team this past Tuesday night. The 87’ Bulldog’s final record was an undefeated 40-0 season and a 51 game winning streak overall. They were one of 11 class 5a undefeated champions and ranked 6th in the nation (USA Today). La Porte Bulldogs are one of Houston’s greatest all-time high school teams (Houston Chronicle-2010).

La Porte High School held a reception and halftime presentation celebrating the 25th anniversary. According to Terri Cook, those present at the reception included the 1987 head coach Tom Holland, assistant coach Pat Tart and players James Pennington, Roy Erskin, Fred Harris, Jarvis Fantroy, Kimmy Washington, Tommy Washington, Richard Allison, Troy Miller, Charles “Smokey” McCovery and former trainers Paul Kistler and Al “Doc” Cooper. Former players Keith Hearon and Ned Roberson attended the halftime presentation. Other members of the 1987 team included William Gooden and Paul McCovery and manager Eric Lippold. Current head basketball coach Gibson “thought it went really great and everything was done well. The ’87 video clip was very well done that made for an all around great night.”
