Looking for a job isn’t necessarily the easiest thing when you have no experience at any jobs. It does not help when every interview managers say “we need someone with experience.” As soon as I turned 16 last year in 2010 I was job hunting and it was always the same result: no job. As a teenager of a Hispanic family of five, supporting and helping my family is one of the most important priorities of my life. I was going crazy. I went one whole year exactly without getting hired. On the Sunday morning of November 5th my dad and I went to Jack in the Box for breakfast. To my luck, the manager was working in the drive-thru. While we were waiting for our order to be ready, my friend Maira Garcia, who was working front counter told the manger I had turned in an application recently. After receiving my breakfast Crystal said to me, “Karina are you still looking for a job? Can you come by Tuesday at 4 PM?” I was so excited I could not wait. On November 8th, 2011 I had my interview at 4 PM with Crystal, Jack in the Box’s manager. After being asked professional questions by Crystal she said to me “so this will be your first job?” As soon as she said that my stomach dropped and I thought to myself, oh no. Here comes the typical “we need someone with experience”. But no! Crystal said, “Well expect my call. Thank you for coming”. On November 9th Maria told me Crystal was expecting my call. With all the excitement, butterflies in my stomach, and as nervous as I was, I called her. As soon as she picked up I told her “Hi Crystal, this is Karina”. She said, “Yes Karina come by Friday at 4 PM with black pants so I can provide you with your Jack in the Box shirts and hat.” HIRED!!!
Finally after a year of job hunting I got hired two weeks before my birthday. What a great way to start my seventeenth year of life.
